Frequently Asked Questions

PACKING AND SHIPPING

Q: How long does delivery take after ordering?
A: Your new trailer should be shipped from the factory in 4-6 weeks depending upon production volume and the level of paint customization you've ordered. If you've ordered a unit configuration stocked at our California facility, shipment will occur in about two days. In either case freight time should be allowed. This ranges from 3-10 days depending on your location.

Q: Will the trailer be shipped to my door?
A: The trailer will be shipped to the location you've specified at time of purchase unless of course you've chosed to pick up the unit at either our Ohio factory or our California facility.

Q: How are the trailers packed?
A: Trailers are packed into a custom designed box. Trailer is in a kit set form, draw bar, wheel and hitch are stowed either inside the body or in the same box. Chassis is bolted to the base ply. Foam padded MDF lines the internal sides so that the box does not deform when handled. The body is protected with foam and paint protective sheets to protect the finish. Take a look here to see photos and descriptions of the unpacking and assembly of the trailer.

Q: Would the box fit into the back of my 4x4 or Suburban?
A: Yes, the carton dimensions are 30-1/2"H x 24-1/2"W x 42-1/2L". Its weight is approximately 100 lb.

Q: Are the trailers insured when shipped?
A: All trailers in transit are covered against damage caused by mishandling or total loss.

Q: Am I required to purchase any special tools for assembly or mounting?
A: No, basic tools commonly found in any garage will do. Again, full assembly documentation and photos can be seen here.

Q: How much camping gear can I fit in the trailer?
A: Please refer to our Specifications Page. You really will be surprised! In just about every case people comment on just how much more roomy the trailer is inside than it looks from the outside.

PURCHASE PRICE

Q: How do your handle the charges to my credit card?
A: As stated on the Purchaser Agreement page, we will charge a $500 non-refundable deposit to your card at the time of order. The balance of your order will be charged at time of shipment or pick up at our Ohio factory or our California facility.

Q: Do you charge sales tax?
A: Not on trailers. Applicable sales tax will be paid at time of registration with your states' Motor Vehicles Department. Other items shipped to a California address will be taxed the appropriate rate.

Q: Are there any other charges that I am responsible for in getting the trailer if delivery is to my door?
A: No additional charges are incurred other than destination charges selected at time of checkout. We do not ship out of the United States and therefore there will be no problems or charges through Customs.

Q: Can I pay by personal check?
A: Yes, however additional time will be required to allow for receipt and clearing of your check.  Also, check payments are required in the full amount of your order at time the order is placed.  Subsequent cancellations and refunds are subject to the terms found in the Purchaser Agreement that you approved at time of order placement.

Q: How will I receive confirmation of my order?
A: We will email you an Order Confirmation. You will have the opportunity during checkout to print your invoice. We will keep you advised as to the status of your order, it's estimated as well as actual shipping date and any freight tracking numbers we have available so that you may track your shipment online.

LICENSING

Q: Does the Uni-Go trailer have to be licensed?
A: In many States the answer is Yes. Some US States exempt light trailers from licensing. Please contact your states' Motor Vehicle Department licensing office for clarification.

Q: Has the Uni-Go been DOT approved?
A: Yes. All trailers are fitted with an appropriate compliance plate and are supplied with all documentation.

RIDE HANDLING

Q: Has any testing been done on the trailer?
A: Yes! The trailer has under gone extreme testing while in tow under all conceivable conditions. It has been towed at more than 130 mph empty while staying on the road and directly behind the bike doing what it was designed to do. It has been put through its paces over years of testing.

This includes:

    * High speed riding (130 mph)
    * High speed cornering
    * High speed emergency braking in corners and straight line

Please note that Bolter's Cycle Specialties and Uni-Go International does not condone speeding. Please observe your local speed limits.

PARKING AND STOPPING

Q: Does the trailer have a front prop stand or a side stand?
A: No. It has an 8" wide front chassis which it rests on.

Q: What prevents the trailer from falling over when I stop?
A: The trailer is connected though a universal joint unlike other trailers that use a tow ball. This keeps the trailer inline with the bike at all times but allowing it to move when riding over bumps and cornering so that it performs with the bike. The trailer leans with you perfectly.

Q: How much extra weight will I notice when picking the bike up off its side stand with a full trailer attached?
A: Almost none. We've ridden with the trailer at full weight capacity and felt no difference putting the bike on its sidestand or raising it up from the stand. Due to the load being low it would feel much lighter than even 1/3 of that same load carried in saddlebags, tailbags, T-Bags, etc.

Q: Will the trailer fit through a standard door?
A: Yes, Many customers pull their trailers into hotel rooms. We've done it! This of course saves unpacking your luggage and hauling all your saddlebags, T-Bags, etc. up to your room.

SUSPENSION AND DRAW BAR

Q: Does the trailer have a suspension?
A:Yes the trailer has a sophisticated suspension design using a counteracting spring loaded swing arm and rebound damper. This system functions very well throughout the the trailers' weight range.

Q: Will the trailer bounce if towed empty?
A: No, it may skip road imperfections, but will always cancel out any bumps on first road contact. You the rider won't even notice this happening.

Q: Do I have to adjust the suspension for different load weights?
A: No, the trailer’s suspension design in combination with the tire will work well from empty to full load weight.

Q: Why does the U-Joint feel stiff when I move it by hand?
A: The UJ needle bearings have been replaced with Nylon bushings. This is to reduce the bearing clearance so that slop is eliminated. Bearing slop would generate into trailer instability at speed. The UJ will feel stiff compared to UJ’s fitted with needle bearings.

Q: Do I need to grease the universal joint or suspension?
A: No, there is no need for any maintenance or adjustment. All you need to do is check tire pressure from time to time. There is a tire pressure sticker right on the swing arm so you'll know exactly what the cold operating pressure should be without having to look it up in a manual.

Q: What does the hitch lock, lock?
A: The hitch lock will secure the trailer to your bike hitch. This way you can be sure that it will remain where you last left it.

STONE DEFLECTOR

Q: What is a Clear Film?
A: 3M clear film is applied to the front portions of the trailer body to protect the paint from stone chips.

Q: How does the optional Bra attach to the trailer?
A: The  Bra is attached by way of snaps and is removable for cleaning.

Q: What is the advantage of the Bra over the Clear Film?
A: There is extra protection from the Bra over the CF. The CF is certainly adequate to protect the paint. The Bra offers that personal touch to complete the package.

WHEEL

Q: Is the Uni-Go wheel standard?
A: No, each wheel is custom made to our specifications as are many other items on the trailer.

Q: Are replacement tires available?
A: Most tire shops will not generally carry these, but we normally have them in stock and can ship these through UPS or the postal service.

Q: How many miles might a tire last before I need to replace it?
A: I have heard from a number of our customers that tires are lasting beyond 50,000 miles. The best case so far is 66,000 miles and still going.

Q: What brand of tire comes with the trailer?
A: Metzeler 130/70/10.

Q: Is the tire tubeless?
A: Yes.

Q: After tire replacement is alignment necessary?
A: No, but the wheel would need to be balanced. This can be done by the tire shop or you can do it by blocking the trailer off the ground so that the wheel spins freely. Spin slowly and note the heavy side of wheel (that side will drop to the ground). Place sticky balance weights to the opposite until the wheel turns evenly.

ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS

Q: What is a trailer isolation relay and why would I need it?
A: The relay isolates the trailer circuitry from the bike’s circuitry. The relay is often mounted under the seat and is wired directly to the bikes' battery. The relay will pick up any signal such as a brake signal and draw the power directly from the battery to power the trailer lights. This device will prevent extra amperage draw on the bikes' wiring. This is a must if your bike is equipped with ABS or Integrated braking system, but is recommended for all bikes. The unit has its own fuses and sub-harnesses are available for the GL1500 and GL1800. For these two bikes the device is plug-and-play. All other bike models would be supplied with a universal sub-harness.

Q: Are the trailer wiring and connectors included?
A: Yes. All trailer-to-bike electrical items are included. There is nothing that needs to be purchased to complete fit up.

Q: Does the harness allow for additional electronics to be placed within the trailer (i.e. CD changer, i-Pod, etc.)?
A: There is an unused wire and connector pin on the trailer plug. That and constant power already in the trailer (power socket) could be used for a custom application.  Of course, we cannot warrant any custom connections you may make.

HITCHES

Q: Are the hitches you supply specific to the Uni-Go?
A: Yes. The hitch frame is specifically designed for the Uni-Go trailer.

Q: Can I use my existing hitch with the Uni-Go?
A: Yes, we can supply an adaptor for many hitch types.

Q: Does the hitch require any welding, cutting or drilling to install?
A: No welding, cutting or drilling is required to install Uni-Go hitches. Fitting instructions are supplied and are also available for download on our site.
